What to expect from Programming Class

One day a man finds a cocoon for a butterfly with a small opening, he sits and watches the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through the little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared stuck.

The man decided to help the butterfly and with a pair of scissors he cut open the cocoon. The butterfly emerges easily, but something was strange. The butterfly had a swollen body and shriveled wings. The man watched the butterfly expecting it to take on its correct proportions. But nothing changed.

The butterfly stayed the same. It was never able to fly. In his kindness and haste the man did not realize that the butterfly's struggle to get through the small opening of the cocoon is nature's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight.

Like the sapling which grows strong from being buffeted by the wind, in life we all need to struggle sometimes to make us strong.

Programs by Unit

Top Down Problem Solving
- Make a PB&J Sandwich Write out an algorithm that would let someone make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich.
- Brush Your Teeth Write an algorithm for brushing your teeth. This time we'll follow a top-down design process.
- Take a Walk Write an algorithm for walking to a location. This time you know exactly what commands are legal.

- None No specific programs for this unit.
My First Program (conversation)
- Conversation A few giant steps beyond "Hello World". This program attempts to hold an interesting conversation with the user. We'll have a contest after this program to see who wrote the best conversation.
Functions (procedures) and Numbers
- Find the Hypotenuse We will develop this program together, so you know what I'm looking for in your programs. This is where we learn about parameters & arguments.
- Calculator Write a program that lets the user multiply and divide. Or make it more interesting by adding more functions.
Returning Values
- Distance Conversion Write a program to convert between different units of distance. This is the first program where you have to use the RETURN statement.
- Temperature Conversion [alternate assignment] You can do this program to raise your grade or to raise your level.
Conditionals & Booleans (if..then..else)
- Rewrite Mr. Sommerer's Program Learn to write a better main() by working with an already written main and filling in the procedures.
- Coffee Shop Write a program that lets customers order from your coffee shop and that tells you the total orders at the end of the day.
- Best Pizza Value [alternate assignment] You can do this program to raise your grade or to raise your level.
Indefinite Loops (while loops)
- 4 little while loops Write a while loop to accomplish each of these 4 programming design patterns: ask each time, ask how many, sentinel values, and accumulators
- Gradebook Write a program to help a teacher figure out the average grades for his class.
- TPS Reports [alternate assignment] You can do this program to raise your grade or to raise your level.
Other Programming Skills
- Tracing Not really a program that you write. More of a way of helping your debug code.
Strings
- is_integer() & is_number() Write these functions and see if they can pass all of Mr. Sommerer's test cases (this program is graded by another program).
- Guessing Game Our first game! I'm thinking of a number... My number is higher... You guessed my number!
Definite Loops (for loops)
- Binary Converter Finally, a program where you have to do something you're not familiar with. This will really stretch your mind and you'll learn about binary numbers.
- Cryptography [alternate assignment] You can do this program to raise your grade or to raise your level.
One Dimensional Arrays (lists)
- Lots of Little List Programs Write 14 little functions, each one harder than the last. You'll understand lists (and probably loops) much better after this assignment. This one is graded by a program, so no documentation necessary!
- Cash Register [alternate assignment] You can do this program to raise your grade or to raise your level.
File Processing
- Usernames & Passwords Getting information from the user is so last unit. Lets just read the data we need from a file. What could go wrong? You will be creating usernames and passwords for students.
Your Final Project
- ??? Finally, you get to write the program that you want to write. Don't worry, we'll help you with ideas to make it great.

Lesson Plan for Wednesday, November 15, 2017

Students are working on their next assignment. They will spend quite a bit of time helping each other. This is to be encouraged. But some of them can start to get off task. They should all be looking at computers, not phones and the contents of their screens should be inscrutable text, not funny cat videos.

Let's have a competition. On the board are the functions that they are writing, and they have a program to tell them their grades. When they get a score in the top 8 (or whatever), have them add their name/score to that column. The most interesting column is the total. They have done this before.

If the grader doesn't work, then I guess we won't have a competition. But I'm pretty sure it works.

This assignment is due next Tuesday and we WILL NOT be going over weekly aneurysms on Friday. Friday will be another day to work on these function. I must be getting soft in my old age.
